The village issued an update at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 after becoming aware of a string hanging from a tree in Louis Engel Waterfront Park that appeared to be tied in a noose.
Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity said that police immediately began an investigation and the chief has met with members of the local clergy and NAACP. They are currently questioning people who may have been witnesses at the park.
The investigation is ongoing and detectives are seeking the public’s assistance and have asked that anyone with information regarding the incident to call the department at (914) 941-4099.
“A noose hanging from a tree is no different than a burning cross or a painted swastika. It is a call to racist violence, and it has no place in our community,” officials said. “As the investigation unfolds, we will learn if there is any criminal act to be charged and prosecuted.”
